Barry Turner

Captain Barry Turner is a Master Mariner/ Marine Investigator who has served 16 years at sea on a variety of vessels, ending with 3 years command experience on foreign going general cargo ships and bulk carriers.

Barry was the Senior Master Mariner and a Partner of the International Law firm Clyde & Co where he worked for 32 years. He was engaged in world-wide investigations of various marine casualties with extensive experience of evidence-gathering and reporting to clients and legal teams on causation and liability. He has also been instructed as an expert witness and has given evidence in legal proceedings in the UK, Norway, Belgium, Portugal and the USA.

Barry has organised several underwater investigations, co-ordinating side-scan sonar and diving surveys in the Gulf, Red Sea, Indian Ocean, North Atlantic Ocean, Mediterranean and North European Waters.

He has also advised clients on ship repair, sale and purchase and charter party disputes, particularly those relating to misdescription; ship performance and claims relating to unsafe ports.

As a Commissioner of a Trust Port in the UK for the last 8 years, Barry has been actively involved in the management of the port and the updating and implementation of the port’s Safety Management System/Marine Safety Code.

He is also a qualified ECDIS operator and has undergone extensive type approved training for a high-profile electronic chart system currently in use on a large number of commercial vessels.

Barry is a Freeman of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners and a Member of the Nautical Institute.
